As a basic language skill, listening is believed to be an efficient way to receivelearning information in the modem times. Listening plays a very important role in alanguage learner's development in other language skills such as speaking, reading, andwriting. Meanwhile, listening is a very efficient means of getting adequate linguisticinput for second language acquirers. It is an essential part for language acquisition andwe can put like this: there is no output without input in language learning. There is nodoubt that for a language learner, developing his or her listening competence is verybeneficial to his or her language acquisition. As we know, listening makes up a large partin our daily communicative activities. However,in China, less importance is attached tolistening in our English learning or teaching. Students spend much time practicing theirreading and writing, but seldom doing listening exercises. And teachers put much stresson training students' reading and writing skills. So, for most second or foreign languagelearners in China,their listening ability is weaker than their reading and writing abilities.Actually, listening plays a vital role in foreign language acquisition. Allowing for the roleof listening in everyday life,some researcher have pointed out that among the time anindividual has spent in communicating with others,approximately 9% time is devoted towriting, 16% time to reading, 30% time to speaking,and 45% time to listening. (Oxford1993). The data indicates that effective listening comprehension is one of the guaranteesto carry out successfiil communication and it should be considered as the most importantin English teaching.
