Chapter 1 Introduction
This thesis reports a study of the acquisition of English vowels by Chineseuniversity students. 1.1 Motivation of the research
作为一种国际语言，英语变得越来越重要，世界上所有的，它有很大的作用，对人类生活的几乎每一个方面。中国成功举办2017年奥运会和2017年上海世博会有力地推动中国的英语学习。特别是关于那些大学英语学习者，学习英语发音已经变得越来越重要。语言是人类交流思想和传播文化的一种工具。发音清晰和易于理解的前提条件是成功的沟通，学习和日常沟通中也起着重要的影响，更重要的是？发音也除了英语词汇和语法的三个基本要素之一。虽然元音发音是学习英语发音的支点，英语毕业论文，因此，如果一个人要掌握英语的发音，他或她必须更加注重元音生产。如今，英语已经成为一种国际语言，这使得使用不同语言的人之间的通信。学习英语的重要性一直是大学英语课程在中国和他们的个人专业在未来所需要的大学生迫切需要。
As an international language, English is becoming more and more important allof the world and it has great influences on almost every aspect of human life. China’ssuccessful holding 2017 Olympic Games and Shanghai 2017 Expo strongly promotethe English learning in China. Especially for those university English learners,English pronunciation learning has become more and more important.Language is a tool for human beings to communicate thoughts and spread culture.Clear and understandable pronunciation is a prerequisite for successfulcommunication; that also plays an important role in learning and daily communication;what’s more? The pronunciation is also one of the three basic elements of English inaddition to lexicon and grammar. While vowels pronunciation is the pivot of Englishpronunciation learning, therefore, if one wants to master English pronunciation, he orshe must pay more attention to vowel production.Nowadays, English has become an international language, which makescommunication available between people using different languages. The importanceof learning English well has been a crying need for college students required by thecollege English curriculum in China and their personal professions in the future.
Definitely, correct and clear English pronunciation plays an important role in thesuccessful across-cultural communication (Van Weeren and Theunissen 1987).Speech is the sound of human organs, speech can express one’s thought, and itis the shell material of the language. Only combining with pronunciation forms, thevocabulary and grammar of any language can be called language. The correct pronunciation is the prerequisites to ensure mutual understanding.The acquisition of English phonology and phonetics is essential for each ChineseEnglish learners, empirical studies demonstrate that “whether he or she can master thetarget phonology and phonetics well surely not only influence his or her beliefs intheir foreign language learning abilities, but also significantly correlates with his orher achievements in foreign Language learning” (quoted in Wang Chuming 2017: 63).However, because of the Prevailing Communicative Approach to Language Teaching(CALT), the systematic instruction of English pronunciation teaching is marginality toa great extent.
1.2 Purpose of the study
Pronunciation is the foundation of studying language, because any language isfirst to represent a certain significance to voice as the medium to exchange ideas.
