Many researchershave provided statistical evidence showing that motivation is a predictor of languagelearning success and motivated students will learn another language faster and to agreater degree (e.g. Gardner 1985; Ellis 1994; Tremblay 1995). As a determiningfactor in language acquisition, motivation directly affects how often learners apply L2learning strategies, how much learners communicate with native speaker, and howlong they persist and maintain L2 skills after the finishing of language study (Oxford& Shearing 1994). Motivation study has become a hot topic for a long period and lotsof fruits have been harvested both abroad and in China.  The early researchers ofmotivation in China have firstly placed their emphases on the introduction of themotivation theory and then gradually evolved to carry out empirical studies. Althoughresearchers in China have conducted the investigation of motivation from variedperspectives, few empirical studies have aimed at art undergraduates.Art undergraduates refer to a special group of students who are distinguishedfrom other students in the light of the feature of their major. Art undergraduates aremainly classified into two majors: music and painting. The intention of emphasizingthe word "undergraduate" in this study is to narrow down the range of art students.Junior college art students who study in the university for three years are not includedin this study.Since 1999, the policy of enrollment expansion in China has changed eliteeducation into popularized education. More and more students have the chance tostudy in the university. And the number of art undergraduates has increasedtremendously. The reasons that students choose art as their major are generally asfollows. Firstly, they ardently love art. Some students have talent or show very stronginterest in music or painting. They love their major and want to devote all time tostudying it. Secondly, students choose art as their major because they dream tobecome such a famous person as star, artist and dancer and so on. Lastly, the reasonthat they choose art as their major is not that they love music or painting but areforced to choose this major because of their poor performance in the exam. Comparedwith students choosing other majors, art students can enter university with a muchlower mark in college entrance examination. And the last kind of students covers alarge proportion. When these students are enrolled into university, English, acompulsory course for all students, is absolutely a big obstacle for them because oftheir poor foundation.At the same time, although the number of art undergraduates has increasedgreatly, they do not receive enough attention from both the university and theacademics. No special teaching material has been published for these students. Anduniversities adopted the same syllabus to them as other non-English major withoutconsidering their gap in English level.Pointing at this phenomenon, English teacher should play a very important rolein improving students’
