As far as I am consider, I do think it is a moral obligation for the rich people to share a part of their wealth with the poor. Sharing wealth with the poor and the needed, or more specifically, charity or philanthropy, can be regarded as a symbol of distributive justice in the society. According to Forsyth.D.R., there are five types of distributive norm which signified the occurrence of distributive justice: equity, equality, power, need and responsibility. Among which responsibility means that “Group members who have the most should share their resources with those who have less” (388-389). From this it can be seen that charity is a requirement of basic social principle. It is a moral issue which connected with all the people in one society. Distributive justice is the source of stability and the motivation to develop, and has been seen as a basic principle and rule for a modern country.If we look at this from another perspective, it would be learned that to share money and resources with the poor can also find support from one of the universally accepted principles: Sharing your wealth with the community is right. People often found it difficult to judge whether something is right or wrong, good or evil. However, no matter in the ancient time or in the modern time, and no matter for which social group, there exist some principles that has been universally accepted. The aforementioned principle is one that will have a influence on all kinds of people in the world. From a moral perspective, this principle tells us exactly what is morally right and should be followed in any case. As a matte of fact, countless of people are putting those principles into practice. And although kindness and compassion should be compared and measured, there still exist some typical figures, organizations and events about philanthropy that can be emphasized and discussed. For example, the charity works of Bill Gates as well as Warren Buffett, two of the wealthiest people in the world. They not only give billions of money out to help the poor, but also devote themselves to inspire others to do so. Just as what was said by Melinda Gates, Mr. Gates's wife and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: “The goal is to help create an expectation in society that the rich should give away their wealth and to create a peer group of wealthy people that can offer advice on philanthropy” ( Guth et al. 9). Not only those who accepted their help, the whole society, including the rich, will benefit from it if most people, especially rich people, just like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, regard sharing their wealth with the poor and the needed as their moral obligation. First of all, the poor surely will benefit a lot from this. Around the world now there are countless of people suffering from poverty, and most of them in developing countries. For them, life is just miserable and exhausting. In most cases they are poor not only because of the demerits among themselves, it is a result of series of complicated factors in their living environment, including climate, geographic location, education, disease, backward culture, natural disaster, politics and so on. Therefore, actually many poor people are innocent man suffering from pain that should never be forced upon them. With rich people’s help, their life can experience some improvement. They can have more food to feed themselves and their families, but the most important thing is that usually charity not only provides poor people with money or food, but also opportunities to be educated, to find jobs and to pursue what they really want. The spirit of this can be seen in a widely liked proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. Thus it is without doubt that people in poverty can more or less directly benefit form those philanthropic actions. Secondly, sharing of money to the poor is good for the whole society. On the one hand, people who suffered from poverty usually put their energy and time all in earning money and feeding themselves and their families. However, if they are helped and given some money, then they can spend less energy and time to worry about food and supporting families. As a result they can spend more time and energy in works that they are passionate about, which will undoubtedly enhance social efficiency and increase more social wealth. On the other hand, philanthropy is an important method to improving distributive justice. As I have discussed before, distributive justice is a significant requirement for social stability. Only a stable society can enjoy development and prosperity, which can be gained only when the poor feels that they are not helpless, lonely and desperate. “Social inequality damages social cohesion, which may lead to violence (insecurity), and violates our sense of fairness” (Marmot 1231). That is why we should encourage the rich to share part of their wealth with the poor; that is why love and brotherhood should never vanish from the world. Thirdly, the rich people themselves can also gain something from charity. How can the value of a human being be really realized? The fame they have? The amounts of money they have earned? Or how big the power they can use? It’s right that all these factors can make sense at some extent in measuring whether a person’s life value has been realized. However, from so many stories and experiences of men, it can be seen that moral self-satisfaction is an indispensable factor. Rich or poor, surely for a person fame, or money, or power means a lot, but without moral self-satisfaction his or her life will still be a tough one, a pathetic one. To help others always make one happy, that why a rich individual should always bear in mind to share the resources he own with others who are in need, and that’s why by helping others wealthy people can gain moral self-satisfaction and happiness. Although there are many reasons why rich people should help the poor, there are also people who disagree and think that it is not a moral obligation for them to help the poor. They believe that the money is earned by themselves and there is no responsibility to do give money to others freely. Some people hold that the poor people become poor because of what they have done with themselves, it’s because of their own problems. Thus, even if they give them more money, they still won’t work hard and the result will always be the same. And if they give alms, possibly will do harm to them. Those arguments are at some extent reasonable. However, they also have to realize that a single person is impossible to create any social wealth and poor people are indispensable part of this society, making contributions to the creation of wealth as well. Besides, if we do not give them the help, for many people they could not do anything more; but if you give them help, they may then try to work hard and help other people who need help. As a matter of fact, according to scientific research, “It is the poor, not the rich, who are inclined to charity”(Piff 64). To argue with the people who thinks that helping the poor may hurt and spoil them, it must be understand that everyone will makes mistakes. As long as one can realize and admit their mistakes, rather than abandon them we should reach out our hand and help them to know what’s wrong and do not to repeat similar mistakes afterwards. To conclude, it is a moral obligation for people who are rich to help and share part of their wealth with the poor and the needed.
