Rhetorical Analysis of Apple’s And Samsung’s Respective Advertisements

The sales campaigns between the world leading cellphone retailers, Apple and Samsung, have never been stopped. On the contrary, the reason why they enter into the wars which are getting fiercer and fiercer is due to the fact that they would like to have a stronger footprint in this competitive world. To promote their sales, Apple Company as well as Samsung Company have been making no stone unturned to advertise to popularize their reputation to make their products more well-known. One of the most common advertisements is visual advertisements posted on their online shopping center captivating thousands of hundreds of customers to purchase. This is going to visually analyze two separately fantastic images created by Apple and Samsung Companies so that the readers will be able to have a better understanding in regards to comparing which image is better. The intended audience could be the designers who have the desire to get some inspiration from wonderful advertisement as well as the consumers who are interested in buying a cellphone.
First of all, the image made by Samsung Company will be discussed. This company has used pathos and ethos to make its visual advertisement effective. For the ethos, as the old saying goes “seeing is believing”. Whatever people state how small a cellphone is, we may not believe it, even if we are told that the cellphone is as long as one and a half electronic pens. This image puts the pen and the cellphone together, therefore, customers will be able to see that how small that a cellphone can be, and they are more prone to believe what they have seen by their own eyes instead of being told by others via words. However, at this time, if the designer had used a bigger pen to highlight how small the cellphone it is, the image would have been more effective, because although the cellphone is more or less as small as an electronic pen, it is still bigger than it. The pen which is bigger than the cellphone will make the cellphone look smaller and people will have an opinion that the cellphone is much smaller than the pen rather than the opinion that the cellphone is almost as small as a pen. This revision is not big, but the efficiency of the image is poorer.
For the pathos, it is noticeable that the screensaver of this cellphone concentrates on a corner of an ice-burg. The blue color will make people relaxed and their heart’s sing. Males will have more feelings of it, because they always want to go and see a real ice-burg by themselves. Thus, the decision of taking the ice-burg as a screensaver is wise and unexceptionable. Moreover, there is a very small icon at in the bottom right corner with a camera showing that touching this icon could go to the camera application immediately. In this contemporary world, people are more and more keen on taking photos when seeing some splendid and picturesque landscapes, thus the cellphone with quick and excellent camera has become increasingly popular. More often than not, people are unfortunate because they missed multifariously beauteous pictures due to opening their camera applications too slowly. Seeing this shortcut key will make those people who are fond of taking photos have more desire to possess one phone.
In addition, we could see that it was mid night and the cellphone was still full charge. Midnight means that the user has been playing his or her cellphone for a whole day, but the battery is very durable. Currently, what worries people most is which kind of cellphone could have a durable battery so that they will not have to change or charge their batteries too frequently. After knowing this, customers will intend to purchase one.
Now, it is the time to have a closer look that the advertisement of Iphone created by Apple Company. Not long ago, Apple has unveiled its newly-made product which they took great pains to develop and refine to the public, namely Iphone 6. Simultaneously, this company has designed a fascinating advertisement posted on its online shopping center. The pathos, logos and ethos that Apple Company used are excellent and impressive. For the ethos, the big Iphone icon at the top of the image illustrates that this picture is about Iphone, the cellphone which are used all over the world the one that everyone wants to possess, the one that can be easily operated and the one that can be used comfortably. All those opinions have been ingrained in people’s minds, hence, seeing the Iphone icon in this image will definitely make customers become so curious that they could not help staring at this picture longer to know what is going on.
Furthermore, the logos that Apple Company used are brilliant as well. After seeing the Iphone icon, there is a banner which wrote “Bigger than bigger”. This will absolutely draw people’s attention. Here comes a question, what does “bigger than bigger” mean? We have never seen this expression before, we know that something is bigger than the other thing, but we never see something is bigger than bigger. The designer is unquestionably a genius. After seeing this expression, people will be taken into a deeper consideration regarding it as well as their minds will be filled with a myriad of thoughts and ideas. For example, they may deem that the size of this new Iphone is bigger than its predecessor, the memory of it is bigger than we can imagine, the content which appears when possessing one will be bigger than any other things. More importantly, no matter how big that we have considered, Iphone 6 will make it bigger. How fabulous this banner is, particularly putting it right below the Iphone Icon. Hereafter, when catching sight of Iphone 6, people will have a point that Iphone 6 is bigger than bigger.
Last but not least, the nice pathos should also be mentioned without a doubt. The white color has been given a priority to occupy the largest part of the whole image. As it has been known to everyone of us, white equals to pure. People will feel calm when they look at something white, they will not be agitated while appreciating this image. What is more impressive is that the screensaver of Iphone matches the whole image perfectly. Taking the vivid and lively leaf as the screensaver will certainly make it more shining. Green color equals to live, especially using a leaf to show. People will feel that they are more alive and energetic if they own a Iphone.
After analyzing the two visual advertisement created by Apple Company and Samsung Company respectively, we can come to a conclusion easily. It is conspicuous that compared with the image advertisement created by Samsung Company, the one made by Apple Company is a lot better. In spite of the fact that both of these two companies have done a great job in designing advertisement, Apple company which created a very effective advertisement has done better in it and will definitely attract more clients to consume its products.
