Semantic contrastive study on case in English and Russian

CHAPTER I  INTRODUCTION
1.1  Significance of the  Contrastive  Study of Form  and Meaning on Case
English language is changed to much extent historically from a "synthetic" language (Old English) to an extremely "analytic" language (Modern English). And Russian language is all along being a synthetic language with case inflections. Even though they belong to two different language systems, through contrast between meaning expressed by the complicated Russian case forms and the meaning expressed by the much less complicated English case forms the relation between case form and meaning will be laid out. Besides this, some words spellings in English and Russian are really similar in word forms in the following examples. So there is a big interest in the contrast and comparison in certain dimensions of case between these two languages.
Secondly, with the changing of English and Russian languages through time geographically and socially, variation in both languages has been studied systematically within many fields of linguistics. It must not be thought that these developments represent a decay of grammar on the one hand or a Darwinian evolution toward progress, simplicity, and efficiency on the other. As Hans H. Hock and Brian D. Joseph put it, the sneakers of languages such as English are quite happy without all those case endings, while speakers of modern `case-rich' language such as Finnish or Russian are just as happy with them. So, as ongoing research is doing, the research of these features on case not only won't cause complications elsewhere in the syntax, but also it makes the teaching and learning of a foreign language easier. Thus, a comparative and contrastive study on "case" was made among Russian and English to confirm the generality as they were valuable for language teaching and learning.
