Abstract

The Reader is one of the masterpieces of Bernhard Schlink,a German writer. After his novel The Reader was published in 1995, and particularly its English version was published in 1997, Bernhard Schlink became an international literary celebrity. Beginning with a sweet hug but ending up with a cold death, The Reader provokes people to think and discuss. It also covers cut-and-dried themes often expressed in other literary masterworks: love and separation, sin and guilt, and the dilemma of morality and law. This novel reveals the tragedy of characters of heroine Hanna and her death as well as a growing history of hero Michael. This thesis first aims to analyze the characters behaviors and psychology of Hanna in the novel, and then conclude that the death of the heroine Hanna will be inevitable.
This thesis includes five chapters. In Chapter One it will introduce the aims, significance, and innovations. Chapter two is literature review, reviewing the studies of The Reader both home and abroad. Chapter three will give a brief introduction to four basic kinds of Carl Gustav Jung: persona, shadow, anim and animus. Chapter four will turn to analyze heroine Hanna’s behaviors, mind and characters and mostly important death of Hanna, based on Jung’s theory. The last part is the conclusion. On the basis of the previous chapters, it can be concluded that Hanna has no way but to suicide.
