Abstract

Language is a mirror, accurately reflecting the culture. Colors, as part of the language, have rich cultural connotations, which are always developing with culture. We should not only observe the basic meanings of colors, but also pay attention to their deeper symbolic meanings. In Chinese and English, language is highly rich in expressing the different colors or shades. Colors in different cultural contexts are given different intentions and symbolic meanings. The symbolisms of color words have a lot of differences in different national cultures. The differences in Chinese and Western Culture determine the choice of color words to express certain meanings. Because their symbolic meanings often have dissimilar meanings and characteristics in different national languages, some characteristics have led to the upholding and taboos after people expound and transfer the meanings of colors. The diverse symbolic meanings of colors in different cultures are due to cultural and historical backgrounds of various ethnic groups, the difference in the aesthetic psychology, and the development of society. With the sedimentary accretion of languages over thousands of years, they become common expressions and permanent cultural images.
In this paper, we explore the symbolic meanings of colors in different cultures, using Chinese and Western cultures as the background to analyze both similarities and differences in understanding colors, and try to find the roots of their similarities and differences.

Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In recent years, both subjects of metaphor and color terms have received much attention and been widely researched by many researchers. The earliest metaphor study can be dated back to about two thousand years ago. From Aristotle, metaphor has been regarded as a deviated use of expressions and words outside their normal, conventional meanings. Many famous theories have appeared with the development of metaphor study. However, the status of metaphor has never been changed. The publication of Metaphors We Live By of Lakoff in 1980 brought a turning point of metaphor study and conceptual metaphor theory came into being. From then on, metaphor was not a figure of speech, but a way of thinking.
