Abstract and Key Words
Abstract: Etiquette is a series of courtesies and civilization norms which have been developed and inherited by a nation under the specific historical conditions and geographical environment, and it can also be considered as a kind of symbol or embodiment of a cultural type(Jin Pinzhuo,2017).This paper aims at analyzing some aspects that can be shown for different etiquette patterns between Chinese culture and western culture, such as “title”, “name”, “meeting”, “banquet and dining” and “lady first” in order to find the differences between Chinese and western culture. The study shows that different thinking and values between people is the cultural root of Chinese-western etiquette differences and concludes that to approach the differences of eastern-western culture and etiquette with “harmonization and difference”, to recognize and respect the differences, and to explore the interoperability in culture and etiquette can help us not only strengthen the sensitivity to cultural differences but also improve the ability for adapting to a foreign culture, and as a result, improve the communication efficiency in the world.

1. Introduction
"Etiquette" is a product of social civilization, and it is a kind of artificially-constructed communication norms which has been used for regulating people’s words and behaviors in their social association. As long as interaction and communication exist in human society, the etiquette is necessary as a channel to express people’s feelings and respect for each other. With China's entry into WTO, China has been contacting more frequently with Britain and the United States (as the representatives of the western countries). If we do not know the western etiquettes, traditions and customs, it may be easy to give rise to misunderstanding, and result in communication obstacles. Some words and behaviors that Chinese do not mind too much can be regarded as something rude, offensive or disrespectful for the western people, thus the obstacles of interpersonal communication are generated. In order to ensure the smoothness of Sino-foreign exchanges and reception services, and to avoid abruptness and rudeness, it is necessary to understand and be familiar with the habits and characteristics of all countries’ etiquettes. Only in this way can we fully respect our guests, show Chinese people’s warmth and hospitality. |
