Abstract
The Shawshank Redemption is a piece of classic work which is extremely encouraging. It contains a profound truth about life. The story tells that a banker Andy is mistaken for the murderer who shots his wife and the lover of his wife and is sentenced to life. However, he never gives up the hope to regain his freedom. Andy digs his way to freedom little by little. This article briefly describes the plot and themes of story. It also uses the method of comparison to analyze the themes of the Shawshank Redemption, freedom and hope. We can find that only hope can redeem freedom.

1. Brief Introduction to the Story
Shawshank’s Redemption is one of the devastating films in Academy Award history, having an important effect on the whole world movie history. It tells a story that the hero, Andy is convicted of a crime that he doesn’t commit, and sent to jail. However, making unremitting efforts, he escapes from the prison successfully and regains the freedom. The story mainly shows the audience a process that how both Andy's body and soul to be saved. Shawshank’s Redemption speaks highly of the redemption of freedom and soul. The hope, freedom and the sincere friendship revealed all belong to the good side of human nature. After reading this story, people all can not help appreciating Andy’s magnificent talent and enormous wisdom. His beautiful spirit touches all people deeply. When faces with the hostile environment and the forces of evil, Andy never gives up fighting with his knowledge, intelligence and strong willpower. He not only redeems himself in the end, but also rescues his inmates.
The Shawshank Redemption is regarded as a wonderful piece of work which can encourage people. In the story, Andy never loses hope to the bright future though his freedom has been taken away. In the prison, he always believes that he can leave Shawshank one day. Freedom and hope are the soul of the whole film, hope passes through the entire movie as the clue.
