Abstract
This paper endeavors to analyze the main speech acts in Obama’s armistice speech on Iraq War and how the political speeches apply the speech acts to express the political intention of the speech. Under the framework of the Austin and Searle’s Speech Act Theory, the analyses place much more emphasis on the illocutionary acts of the specific speech acts. Furthermore, Van Dijk’s Macro-speech Act Theory are presented to explore the relationships of these speech acts and discuss how the various subsidiary speech acts, taken as a “whole”, to support the main speech acts and to clear the intention of the speech and even the politics and standpoint of Obama. As there is limited research on macro speech acts of political speeches, this study carves out a new way on the study of political speeches.
