An Analysis on the Conversational Implicatures of Online Chatroom Conversations from the Perspective of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle
Abstract
Due to the fast development of the Internet, more and more people communicate with each other online. At the same time, the online chatroom language shows up as a new language phenomenon in our daily life and it causes the interest of many linguists. H.P. Grice's cooperative principle(CP) and Leech's politeness principle(PP) help to achieve successful communication in keeping principles in people's mind during conversation. The cooperative principle and politeness principle could be used to analyze the online chatroom conversation, because the speakers in the online chatroom conversation who violate these two principles will show plentiful implicatures, and the motivation is also very interesting.
The conversations in which speakers violate the cooperative principle and politeness principle are regarded as the object of the thesis, and the author tries to analyze the conversational implicatures in these samples. Then, it could be concluded that speakers manage to reach the final conversation goal through violating the two principles. This thesis will be divided into six chapters. The first chapter will talk about the background and situation of the present study, its methodology and data. The second chapter will show the literature review of the theory. Next chapter will give an brief introduction about the Netspeak and online chatroom conversation. The fourth chapter shows the speakers' violation of the cooperative principle and politeness principle and the intended conversational implicatures. The last but one chapter talks about adding new conversational principles to achieve successful communication in online chat. And, the last chapter is the conclusion of the whole thesis.
