Abstract
Jack Kerouac (hereinafter referred to as Kerouac), an American writer of 1950s, who belongs to the Beat Generation, is considered a literary iconoclast; Wang Shuo (hereinafter referred to as Wang), a Chinese writer in 1990s, is also viewed as a cultural iconoclast. Since the end of 1980s, Wang has been regarded as China’s Kerouac due to his works share some similarities with the works of Kerouac. Since then, the controversy about whether Wang is a pioneer Beat writer in China started and still go on today and there’s no unanimous definition yet.
So, employing the parallel study method, this thesis tries to make a comparison between Wang and Kerouac, analyze and clarify similarities and differences between these two writers, to provide evidences to prove that their iconoclasm is different in essence and Wang is not a Chinese Beat writer.
