Abstract
A Beautiful Mind is an American biographical drama film which is honored with Academy Awards. It is based on the life of John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics, who gets schizophrenia but devotes himself to game theory and differential geometry. The word “mind” has two-fold meanings. On the one hand, it refers to “brain”, reason and intelligence. On the other hand, it symbolizes “heart”, emotion and spirit.
This thesis proceeds from character analysis of Nash, decodes his personality and mental traits and is divided into three parts. It first analyzes the outstanding scientific creative intelligence, interpersonal relationship obstacle and uncontrollable mood of Nash when his brain and heart were out-of-balance. Then, utilize Freud’s unconscious theory and Jung’s archetype theory to discover what accounts for Nash’s fantasies and unveil his mental needs. At last, it focuses on the period when Nash possessed balanced brain and heart as well as explaining his recovery factors such as his trust for love, the inclusive campus, relentless pursuit of science and positive attitude of controlling fantasies. In the light of the above analysis, it is obvious that the film calls for beautiful affection and suggests everyone has a balanced development of intelligence and emotion.
The thesis not only makes film appreciation and reveals the theme of the film by character analysis of the hero, but also decodes a schizophrenic’s fantasies and recovery with psychological theory, providing a direction of psychic case analysis.
