Study on the Cultural Conflict and Confusion of Simon in Ang Lee’s Film The Wedding Banquet from the Perspective of Triandis’Individualism/Collectivism Theory
Abstract
Ang Lee’s film, The Wedding Banquet, is the representative of the films about cross-cultural communication. Rich in cross-cultural connotation, it is frequently studied by many researchers. Among them, most generalize the difference between American culture and Chinese culture without depth. Many articles also many meanings are contained in one single article. The points center on the conflict between the father and the son, and cultural difference obviously reflected by the wedding banquet. So how to narrow down the topic from a new small cut-point is important.
This thesis employs Triandis’ individualism/collectivism theory as theoretical foundation and Simon as a new cut-point to analyze cross-cultural connotation. It first gives a review of the story in the film and the content of the theory. Then it demonstrates individualism pattern and collectivism pattern in Simon’s behavior and words in detail. In the part all the characters of both individualism pattern and collectivism pattern are displayed. The conflict and confusion of individualism and collectivism can be figured out systematically. At last, it provides some suggestions for further study in cross-cultural studies in the film with other cross-cultural theories from a new angle.
Key words: The Wedding Banquet, cross-cultural connotation, Simon, Triandis, individualism/collectivism theory
