Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research background
In recent years, student-centered teaching arouses increasingly much attention from teachers and researchers in English teaching. It is not the simple redistributed class time. English teachers should not only teach English knowledge, but also organize the teaching procedures based on the learning process and features, such as age, motivation, language aptitude. That is, the teaching mode should be individualized. English teachers should take full consideration of individual differences of students to make them become real autonomous learners (Williams & Burden, 1997). Learning style is one of the important aspects of individual differences and has become the active topic of numerous studies. Learning styles involves lots of aspects, including cognition, affection, performance and so on. Sensory learning style or perceptual learning style is a term that illustrates learners’ distinctions in utilizing one or more senses to comprehend, organize, and retain knowledge or experience (Reid, 1987). And in order to realize the combination of English teaching and learning style, it is necessary to introduce autonomous learning to the English teaching. Therefore students can understand their own learning styles and the corresponding learning strategies to become proactive learners. Vocabulary is the basic part of language. Zhang (1997) illustrates communication will not start without vocabulary, even if one person has complete grammar knowledge and excellent pronunciation and intonation. Therefore, vocabulary learning can be seen as the foundation of language learning. And as for English, vocabulary teaching plays a significant role in the English teaching. For junior high school students, they start to learn English systematically. And English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education (2017 Edition) propose that junior high school students should master nearly 1600 words as well as 200 to 300 idioms or fixed expressions after graduation. So English vocabulary of junior high school is large and active.
