Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the Present Study
Teacher talk plays an extremely important part in English teaching and learning inEnglish classroom. On the one hand, teacher talk is a medium of English teaching andlearning in English classroom; on the other hand, it is an indispensable means for Englishteachers to organize teaching activities and to implement teaching tasks. Learning a foreignlanguage, like English, is a difficult and time-consuming process. Learning motivation isregarded as one of the crucial factors in teaching and learning English successfully.Therefore, it is crying for the English teachers to be aware of arousing students’ Englishlearning motivation.Since teacher talk runs through the teaching process, it should be an effective way tostimulate students’ learning interest and promote their learning motivation. However, inChina, many English teachers have a poor awareness of teacher talk theory and students’learning motivations are relatively low. This study aims to solve the problems.

1.2 Significance of the Present Study
In a book entitled Language Teaching Methodology: A Textbook for Teachers, Nunan(1991) clarifies that teacher talk has a decisively important role in both the classroomorganization and English learning acquisition process. It is crucial for teachers to organizeand manage the English classroom because it can be used to estimate whether the teacherswill succeed or not in carrying out their teaching plans. On the basis of acquisition, teachertalk is accounted as an important factor because it is likely to be the primary source of targetlanguage input that the students probably acquire.Up to now, few studies of junior high school English teacher talk are on students’English learning motivation, hence this study can help much more junior high schoolteachers realize that teacher talk is a great concern in English classrooms, which will bebeneficial to both teachers and students. Pedagogically, the study can help teachers have abetter understanding of the nature of motivation in classrooms. In other words, they caninspire and maintain students’ motivation in learning English through appropriate andeffective teacher talk. For students, their English learning motivation has been aroused, sothey can learn English better than before. Accordingly the quality of junior high schoolEnglish teaching can be improved.

Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Teacher Talk
Teacher talk is considered as a basic way for teachers to deliver knowledge to students,and it is a main means to manage the students’ learning behavior and stimulate their learningmotivation as well. However, the teacher-centered teaching model is a very commonphenomenon. Through the researcher’s observation in junior high school English classroom,the teachers seem to talk too much. For this reason, it is urgent to put forward the followingissues: What is teacher talk? What are the features of teacher talk? And what are thefunctions of teacher talk?Lots of researchers have defined teacher talk in recent years. The definition of teachertalk can also be found in dictionaries. According to Bussmann (2017), teacher talk is theartificial language spoken by the second/foreign language teachers with the purpose ofconveying meaningful information to the language learners.
