1.1 Question Raising
The communicative teaching method which developed in 1970s stressed thecommunicative function of a language, in other words, if two persons can communicatesuccessfully, that’s enough. This situation made many English teachers in China did notattach importance to English pronunciation teaching and ranked the pronunciation lowerin English. English pronunciation plays an essential part in communication and its errorsnot only make communication difficulty but also influence effective communication. Forexample, some students misread “I’d like to have a nap” as “I’d like to have a lap”, whichmakes the speakers quite misunderstand during communication because of their awkwardpronunciation. It is very hard to solve these problems because their pronunciation habitshave formed at the beginning of studying English. Even after learning English for manyyears, some students still cannot read new words correctly by international phoneticsymbol and always rely on the help of teachers or tapes. Therefore for a beginner, learningcorrect English pronunciation is basic. And the study on English pronunciation teachinggets urgent and necessary.The paper which applies jazz chants to English phonetic teaching aims to discusswhether jazz chant training model can promote students’ English phonetic learning andthen provides teaching theory for English phonetic teaching.

1.2 Reasons for Question Raising
In relevant research area, papers of the importance of pronunciation teaching can befound everywhere. However, research on how to carry out pronunciation teaching is scanty In China, pronunciation learning is very important in elementary and middle school. To bewell known, children are different from adults. For them, traditional pronunciationteaching method is dry and dull and the study of phonetic symbol and pronouncing lettersproperly and other phonetic knowledge which always need to be practiced over and overagain is too monotonous. Consequently, how to make pupils and middle school studentsget interested in pronunciation studying and how to get pronunciation teaching active andcharming are getting a really important topic. And it is also the topic I want to research.

2 Literature Review


2.1 Research at Home
Chinese scholars are willing to pay attention to contrastive analysis of English andChinese. They analyze the two languages from many different aspects and levels. Englishphonetics learning and teaching have been discussed by many scholars such as ZhangGuanlin, Bao Qing and Gui Cankun. Differences of vowels and consonants betweenEnglish and Chinese are shown in their studies. And in the late 19thcentury, in order tohelp learners improve English learning, many linguists and educators did their best todevelop new teaching method. Basing on many experimental studies, they aimed to checkwhether some teaching method was practical or not. During the 1880s, linguists in England designed International Phonetic Alphabet. Martin Wedell and Liu Runqing (1995)stated that systematical comparison of phonetics can be done between all languages.
