1.1. Research Background

The latest reports of the Entrance Test for High School of English also showthat average scores for reading in the recent two years were not satisfying, which inreturn causes more anxiety among teachers.Local experts of teaching in Guangzhou suggest that the methods of readingteaching, to some extend, contributes to this embarrassment.The traditional teaching method based on bottom-up model is still dominating inmany schools. Teachers using this model divide a text into separate linguistic units.They teach new words first, followed by phrases, sentences and then paragraphs,attempting to solve every grammar problem students may meet in reading.
