1.1. Research Background

According to Carrell (1989), reading is the most important basic skill ofthe four, particularly for the students of English as a second or foreign language.However, reading is more than a word-decoding process. That is the reason whymany students they cannot understand the theme of the article though they canunderstand the words.In the New Curriculum Standards for the High School published in 2017 by theMinistry of Education of the People's Republic of China, reading is regarded as a wayto get information, to enrich knowledge, to have fun. The aims for reading learning areto cultivate reading strategies and to develop language competence in discourse. Thisputs forward higher requirements for reading teaching -- from sentence level todiscourse level.

Consequently, English teachers in high schools arerequired to give priority to reading in classroom teaching.Aimed to improve students’ language competence, a new series of textbooks calledOxford English (Guangzhou Edition), which were firstly published in 2017 and revisedin 2017, comes into use in Guangzhou recently. On one hand, these books contain avariety of authentic materials with different themes and text types, which is commonlyregarded as beneficial to improving reading. On the other hand, teachers alwayscomplain that they find it difficult to deal with the long text with a large vocabulary inthe limited time, some of whom even claim that the new textbooks will easily frustratestudents. The latest reports of the Entrance Test for High School of English also showthat average scores for reading in the recent two years were not satisfying, which inreturn causes more anxiety among teachers.Local experts of teaching in Guangzhou suggest that the methods of readingteaching, to some extend, contributes to this embarrassment.The traditional teaching method based on bottom-up model is still dominating inmany schools. Teachers using this model divide a text into separate linguistic units.They teach new words first, followed by phrases, sentences and then paragraphs,attempting to solve every grammar problem students may meet in reading.
