1.1 Background of the study
In group work, learners perform a learning task through small group interaction. It is a form of learner activation that is of particular value in the practice of oral fluency. Oxford (1997) insists that cooperative learning, such as group work can not only reduce students’ worriment and prejudice but enhance their internal motivation, promote their self-respect and help them form harmony and altruistic relationships in the classroom. Ur (2017) points out that using group work in the classroom makes it possible for a number of students to talk in narrow period of time and reduce some of the students’ shyness in speaking in front of large audience. Compared with traditional way of teaching, group work makes a lot of advantages in English classes. The New English Curriculum Standard embodies the spirit of taking students as the teaching center in every aspect. Group work puts great emphasis on student-centered teaching pattern, which increases a strong association among students in teaching process. It fosters learners’ responsibility and independence. It can also improve motivation and contribute to a feeling of cooperation and warmth in the class. The purpose of foreign language learning is to communicate. Group work improves students’ communication skills, which provides a lot of chances for students to communicate with each other . Moreover, group work makes advantage for self-regulated learning. It can keep the class in order and improves quality of students’ learning activities, which helps to realize students’ autonomic learning. Besides, in group work, teachers create every chance for students to study and make them acquire more knowledge. At the same time, students pay more attention to sharing responsibilities and helping each other. In this way, their language learning ability may be improved.
