1.1 Research Background
The demand for developing elementary Education: The development of elementaryeducation is closely concerned with millions of children’s healthy growth, great interests ofcountless households and the nation’s future. As the essential component of our nationaleducation system, the elementary education has obtained remarkable progress with higherpopularization since the implementation of the reform and opening up policy. Especially inrecently years, it has acquired significant development. As a result, the government and thesociety become increasingly aware that the growth of education is inseparable from teachers andthe enhancement of teachers’ quality. However, there are still multiple difficulties and problemsfacing elementary education, among which is to promote teaching level in primary and middleschools.The initial stage of English elementary education in our country: With the globalization insocial and economic sectors, primary English education becomes more essential and crucial inthat China is in great need of English talents. To meet such demands, our English education haspenetrated into various ages and sectors. As the initial stage for English education, Englishteaching in primary school, indispensable in children’s language development, plays a significantrole in particular. Therefore, it’s urgent and pressing to improve teaching ability for primaryschool English teachers, which requires higher demands of English normal majors in highervocational colleges.The requirements of new curriculum reform: Following the implementation of the newcurriculum reform, the self-inquiry teaching ability has become one of the most important andefficient teaching abilities. Contemporary education puts emphasis on the innovative spirits andpractical abilities of each student in order to promote their all-round development. Self-inquiryteaching is just one of these methods. In the beginning of early 1900s, American educationalistDewey first came up with the relatively systematic self-inquiry teaching theory, which attractedgreat attention to the subjectivity of students and aroused deep reflections on teachers’ role ineducation from the public. Then since the introduction of self-inquiry teaching concept in the1970s, our nation began to widely implement such idea in the 1990s.One important targets of thenew round of elementary education curriculum reform is to alter the students’ passive learningapproach and to actively get themselves involved in inquiry study. The proposal is that “studentsshould enhance their inquiry and innovation awareness through practices, study scientificresearch approach so as to develop their ability to apply the knowledge comprehensively”.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
This paper is intended to study the practical significance for investigation on theself-inquiry teaching ability of English normal majors in vocational colleges and research onhow to cultivate their self-inquiry teaching abilities.In the contents of this paper, it firstly introduces the current circumstances of self-inquiryteaching abilities of English normal majors in vocational college. Secondly, it puts forward someopinions on how to cultivate such ability form the points of instructors, intern teachers andprimary school students.
