1.1 The background of the research
In china, English is as important as Chinese. Many parents ask their children to learnEnglish at their early age. But it seems that English is so difficult for them to learn. Evenhaving learned for many years, they can’t use it well. Some experts say that maybe it isbecause the students just learn the vocabulary, the pronunciation, the spelling, the rules ofword formation, and linguistic semantics, they don’t learn how to master it, it is deeplyinfluenced by the structuralism. Chinese people only focus on grammatical competence.They just want to have a higher score in the exams. And the teachers teach their studentsby a traditional method. In our country, it’s dominated by a teacher-centered,book-centered and grammar-translation method and emphasis on rote memory. They thinkit’s the fastest way to make the students improve their English ability. The teachers try theirbest to make the students memorize the vocabulary and grammatical rules, and recite thepassage and text. The teachers think this method is the most important way to get a higherscore. When the students get higher scores, they could enter into a better high school orcollege. But when they are in the college, they find themselves can’t understand the nativeEnglish speakers, they can’t communicate with others. They know they don’t have a goodmastery of English. Of course, it is proved that the Chinese English teaching is not thatkind of successful. With the influence of a worldwide culture appeared, many studentshave learned English for several years complain that there are many problems about theirEnglish, and more and more professor and teachers think that language is more importantthan grammatical rules. But it does not mean that grammatical knowledge is helpless anduseless. In fact, linguistic competence is an important component.

1.2 The significance of the research
With the rapid development of science and technology, cross-cultural communicationis becoming more and more popular. People learn English by watching movies, TV, chatwith foreigners and go abroad for a further education. Different people have different cultural backgrounds. They learn English in different ways. In China, English is asimportant as Chinese. This new situation brings both opportunities and challenges. In orderto meet the demands of society, excellent graduates are needed.It’s important to master the pronunciation, grammar, words and spelling. But inmodern society, learning English well is more than that. The better ways of learning is tolearn from native speaker’s ideas, customs, behaviors, and language of the mind. If youwant to learn a language well, you should know its history and culture. Because languagecan not be separated from its culture. In real situations, we need to find guidelines of thecultural learning. So, English teachers should find out better teaching methods to enrichstudent’s cultural knowledge and practical knowledge in learning language.
