Chapter One Introduction


1,1 The Origin of the Study
Language recitation input has been one of the most important methods inlanguage learning in China for more than hundreds of years. And there are a largeamount of old Chinese sayings about the significance of recitation input such as "afterone has leamt three hundred poems of the Tang Dynasty by heart,even if he cannotwrite poems by himself, he is sure to be able to chant some (Sun Zhu),,; and "havingpored over ten thousand volumes of books, one has the ability of writing with godlypower". (Du Fu) However, in today's China, after assessing the modem value of thetraditional learning approach of recitation input in acquiring a second language, amajority of senior high school students and even a few English teachers regard it as atime-wasting,obsolete and even totally useless English learning method. It isprobably because of the limited, valuable and precious time for students to read andrecite English articles under the pressure of exam-oriented education. Maybe it is alsobecause of the popularity of certain new teaching and learning methods such as thecommunication method, the situational teaching approach and so on. Indeed, evensome students' parents who almost know nothing about curriculum instructionalways emphasize that second language acquisition should focus on flexible andpractical application instead of learning by rote. It is true in some cases. However, itdose not always hold water when the recitation input is really effective. Actually,it isdefinitely and absolutely a misunderstanding that recitation input equals mechanicallearning without thinking. Effective recitation input,which is based on grasping thereal meaning of the materials and active thinking, is different from plain rote memory.

1.2 The Purpose of the Study
Classical essays recitation has been one of the most important traditionalteaching approaches in China for hundreds of years. Many well-known scholars haveused this simple method to leam a language since they were elementary schoolstudents. For example, Lao She once said that it was because he had recited the wholebook Archaism (Guwenguanzhi) when he was still a child that he finally became a literary giant in China. And learning a foreign language is no exception. It is believedthat normally speaking,compared to foreign students, our Chinese students are muchmore accustomed to the Chinese traditional learning approach of essay recitationinput. English writing ability is one of the required skills which high school studentsshould have. Since the year of 2017, the score of the writing part in college entranceexamination has increased significantly. Therefore, English composition is becomingmore and more important in an English test. Language input is the basis of languageoutput.
