Chapter One Introduction


1.1Background of the Research
According to the New Standard of English, students need to master five kinds ofknowledge, that is, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, function and topic. As isknown to all, vocabulary is the basis of learning English. However, the teaching ofvocabulary in high schools is ignored in most high schools. The reasons are as follows:first, students’ learning English words depends on their after-class efforts becauseteachers can not tell the meaning of each word in reading; second, classes are focusedon the teaching of reading texts and language points and students spend most of thetime in finishing the homework—the examination-oriented test papers. Althoughstudents put a lot of efforts in English studying, their learning has met with greatchallenge. According to the questionnaire in this study, students have great difficultyin memorizing the new words. They think the real obstacle in learning English iswords. Students would like teachers to spend more time in teaching English wordsinstead of dealing with passages which are difficult for them to understand. Sincestudents have realized the importance of English words, teachers should help studentsmaster the new words more efficiently. They have six subjects to learn in school, andthere are so many English words for them to remember. Based on the previoussituation, a useful and efficient method to learn and remember English words is ingreat need.The research on Mind Map in China has become one of the research projects of“The Eleventh Five Year Plan”. Many researchers prove that Mind Map is useful in allkinds of fields. For English vocabulary teaching, the application of Mind Map is alsobeneficial. Mind Map is the real representation of thinking in our brain in that both ofthem are in the shape of radiant network. Mind Map makes our thinking leveled andclear, which provides us with sharp thinking. Besides, the application of Mind Map isthe teaching method of cultivating students to explore the method to memorize newwords suitable for them and beneficial for their lifetime learning. EducatorB•A•Cyxomjnhcknn used to say, “The real school is a place for students to thinkactively.”(Zhang, 2017) So cultivating students’ independent thinking is the mostimportant task in teaching.

1.2 Significance of the Research


1.2.1 Theoretical significance
An old saying goes like this: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”(Wang, 2017) Teaching andlearning method is more important than language points. Effective learning strategycan improve students’ learning efficiency and interest. The right and suitable approachof learning can also have a good effect on students’ intellectual development andformation of character. The application of Mind Map can provide a way of learningstrategy and enrich students’ vocabulary. Mind Map is the representation of radiantthinking and thus it is also the natural function of human thinking. It is also agraphical technology of great use and an almighty key to knowing the brain. MindMap can be used in all kinds of fields and human behavior can be improved by usingthe Mind Map in thinking and learning.
