1.1 The importance of English writing
As is known to us all, English, which is being accepted an internationallanguage in the world, is given much attention by increasing people at home andabroad. China, a country with a large population in the world will play a more andmore important role in the international area politically and economically in theprocess of the globalization. Undoubtedly, learning English well is a great challengefor students at fundamental stage, including senior students. What makes us satisfiedis that we have made rapid progress in English teaching in recent years. In addition,writing, as one of the four basic skills of language learning, plays an extremelyimportant part in English teaching and writing ability is closely related to reading,speaking, listening skills. It is impossible that a student who is poor in writing may begood at speaking, listening or reading. Writing is a complex process of languagecommunication and is also a creative thinking process where students can improvetheir integrated English ability through writing. In short, English writing, one ofmeans of communication as well as one of skills of English learning, should be paidmuch more attention in English teaching.

1.2 The problems existing in English writing teaching in senior high school
Despite the fact that many people are aware of the significance of English,English writing has been the weakest part in senior high school for a long time. Inrecent years, with increasing English tests involved to writing, both teachers andstudents have begun to realize the importance of writing and take some effectivemeasures to improve students’ ability to write. However, owing to various reasons,there still exist several problems at the moment with traditional writing method. Inorder to get a better understanding of students’ attitudes and beliefs towards learningEnglish before the teaching experiment, the author chose five students at the differentlevel from the experimental class and conducted an interview before the research. Theoutlines are as follows:
1) Do you like English writing? Why?
2) What you think is the most difficult in learning English, listening, speaking,reading or writing?
3) Do you know any writing approaches to writing?
4) Do you have confidence in English writing?

Chapter Two Literature review


2.1 Approaches in English writing teaching field
The product approach is based on the theory of behavioristic theory, which is atraditional method of teaching writing. The teaching process is regarded asstimulus-reaction process, one process that he teacher gives stimulus and studentsmake response. Thus, students have been relatively passive in the whole process ofteaching writing. This is a bottom-up method based on the sentence level of writing. Itattaches great importance to the language knowledge and pays special attention to thevocabulary, the syntax and cohesive devices used properly (Pincas, 1982). It focuseson the students' ability of words and expressions, from a sentence to a paragraph, andthen to the final product, especially the grammatical accuracy and precise rhetoricalorganization.
