Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the study
English is one of the most popular languages in the world. Under the background of globalization, grasping English is of great importance. And this is the reason that China has attached great attention to English language teaching and learning. In many colleges and universities, more and more students have passed the College English Test Band Four(CET-4) and Six (CET-6). For English majors, most of them have passed Test for English Majors Band Four (TEM-4) and Eight (TEM-8). And many English majors have got their interpreting qualification certificate. As a result, many Chinese people can speak fluent English and communicate with foreigners without any difficulty. However, there are still a lot of English learners who have trouble in their study of English. Based on years of private supplementary tutoring practice, the author has found that most of the unsuccessful English learners have difficulty in learning English words to acertain extent. Limited vocabulary has become the biggest obstacle to the effective learningof English language learners. Many students complain that memorizing English words costs a lot of time. At the same time, the words they have already memorized are easily forgotten. As a result, many English learners have lost heart in learning English.Vocabulary is fundamental to language learning and expanding English learners'vocabulary is the key to learning English well.

Vocabulary is the combination of sound,word form, meaning and usage in certain context, and it is the basic unit of the sentence. Indaily life, people exchange their thoughts and ideas by using integrated meaningfulsentences which are made by words. English Learners are able to read and understand wellonly when they have a sufficient vocabulary. By doing this, English learners can make"comprehensible output" when they speak and write. Issued by the Ministry of Education,"Senior High School English Curriculum Standards (experimental) "(2017) has a higherrequirement of English vocabulary for Senior High School students than ever before.Level-8 of the language knowledge aim requires high school students to master about 3300words and 400 to 500 idioms or fixed collocations. The new curriculum materials under the guidance of the new curriculum standards have a requirement of a larger vocabulary forstudents. Even more, a considerable number of the words are very flexible in their use sothat it is very difficult to master them for the learners. Thus, traditional vocabularyteaching methods are not able to meet the requirements of vocabulary teaching in the newcurriculum standards any longer. How to improve the efficiency of vocabulary teachingand learning has become a question which is extremely urgent to be solved under the NewCurriculum Reform.
