Chapter 1 Introduction
With the development of economy and society, the relationships of the countries in the world have been becoming more and more inseparable. The number of English learners is growing rapidly and they learn the English for different aims. The learners want either to obtain employment or to go abroad. It is a common phenomenon to learn English in school, even primary school. It is generally believed that English learning is a very difficult process.

Listening, as one indispensable skill, is required to grasp by English learners, which may helpmeasure a foreign language learner’s overall linguistic proficiency.When some people try their best to demonstrate the strong evidence to show theimportance of listening comprehension skill, L.G Alexander (1968), an English linguist, givesthe incisive description of listening, and he says, “Nothing should be spoken before it hasbeen heard, nothing should be read before it has been spoken. Nothing should be writtenbefore it has been read”.Listening is the important qualification to a successful performance in which it plays agreat important role in social or interpersonal communication. It is of great significance forthe senior school students to improve the ability of their listening comprehension. Especiallyin senior high school, the teacher must foster the students’ English quality firmly, whichindicates the successful college life to a bright future. Obviously, in order to become anexcellent English learner who owns great English proficiency, the listening teaching can notbe ignored.Through analysis and investigation, most senior high schools have attached importanceto improve listening teaching since the National English Curriculum Standard wasimplemented in 2017, but it still exist some problems which hinder the effectiveness oflistening teaching.
1.1 Background of the Research
1.1.1 Current Situation in English Listening Teaching in Senior High School
Senior school English teacher should focus on improving students’ ability of listening comprehension, because it is an important link to enhance their overall English skills. Thenew Senior High School English Curriculum Standards have heightened the requirements forsenior high school students in listening. In High School English Curriculum Standard, firstlyit describes the linguistic skills’ goals: the training of listening, speaking, reading, writingshould be based on the students’ needs of developing the several aspect skills in high school.That is to say, in addition to examinations, the teacher should choose the effective method ofteaching to satisfy the students’ learning needs.Traditionally, examination-based education occupies an important position in Englishlistening teaching. The most frustrating problem which plenty of students often complain isthat they are not a successful listener for listening comprehension in English learning, andthey have little confidence even being nervous and anxious when they are requested to get tounderstand a listening material especially more difficult one. Few students try to use listeningstrategy, and they try to understand the meaning by listening every word or sentence but theyhardly associate or infer the situation.
