Chapter One Introduction


1.1 The Background of the Study
Higher Education should assist students to develop necessary skills, values andattitudes to deal with the complex problems they may confront in their future life.However, in China the theories students leam are not well put into practice. Whenconfronting real life problems, students do not have enough knowledge to solve them.The educational reform is introduced to higher education and it focuses more onteaching quality. The Ministry of Education started the Higher Institution TeachingQuality and Teaching Reform Project in 2017,in which college English teachingreform project was initiated. The aim of the college English teaching reform project isto stimulate students' interest and improve their confidence in English learning, tohelp the students develop positive attitude toward English learning and to improvetheir skills of communicating with other people in English in their fixture life. In 2017,the Ministry of Education issued the College English Curriculum Requirements whichemphasizes the cultivation of college students' listening comprehension abilities andspeaking skills under the current situations. Therefore, the education of students' oralEnglish competence is very important in college English teaching. Influenced bytraditional teaching methods, oral English teaching still faces some problems.Students are not active in the oral English class and they are reluctant to participate inthe class activities.

1.2 Necessity and Significance of the Study
With the development of the informatization and globalization, English hasbecome the international language and it is an essential tool for us to leam about theworld and to communicate with others. Bruner (1965) suggests that education shouldfree society and help students develop to their full potential, which are the goals ofeducation. College English teaching is to educate students with high level foreignlanguage skills and to meet the development of China's society and economy. As theCollege English Curriculum Requirements demand, the application of PBL in oralEnglish teaching is to meet the reform of college English teaching. According to theCollege English Curriculum Requirements, the objective of college English teachingis to develop students' ability in an all-round way so as to communicate effectively intheir future life. Meanwhile, college English teaching should also cultivate students'ability to conduct autonomous learning and improve their general cultural awareness,so that students can adapt to the needs of China's social development and confront theinternational exchanges.The oral English class is greatly influenced by class activities since students'communicative competence can get greatly improved by using real and appropriatelanguage to communicate with their peers. Constructivists take the idea that language learners get their understanding of the usage of language use in real life languageactivities,but not by learning lists of rules. Various activities in oral English class arecarried out in accordance with students' needs. Students enjoy searching the origin ofthings and conveying their own viewpoints in English. Hence,英语毕业论文,the implementation ofvarious effective activities in which students are encouraged to take part ischallenging and critical, and students' interest and confidence in speaking English arestimulated and improved.
