As an instrument of communication, language consists of three elementsthat mean pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Therefore, vocabulary is a basicelement of any language. Many teachers have found that the whole languageefficiency consists of more than grammatical competence and vocabulary ability is animportant part of language learning.Wilkins (1978) held the view that "without grammar very little can be conveyed,without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed". Laufer and Sim (1987) pointed outthat foreign language learners seem to rely more on word meaning than on knowledgeof the subject or syntax. Homlet (1990) found that if we compare language structureas the sketch of language,vocabulary is the thing that provides important organs aswell as blood and flesh. This means that vocabulary is necessary to approach andunderstand certain text freely and drastically.To cope with increasingly fierce international competition,Chinese studentscollege students are asked to enhance their English skills and abilities in both oral andwritten communication.Higher vocational Colleges represent a new direction in our education system.What's more, English is the main course for students there. Vocabulary teaching andlearning has long been an intractable problem in these colleges. It is necessary for theteachers in higher vocational colleges to master the philosophy of teachingmethodology of English vocabulary in order that their students can achieve aneffective way of foreign language learning.It has been pointed out by some scholars that many students coining fromdomestic higher vocational colleges have great trouble in English learning due to thereason that their poor vocabulary. Limited vocabulary influences their reading ability,listening ability, expressing ability and writing ability. In fact,vocabulary imposed abig challenge on English vocabulary teaching and learning in many higher vocationalcolleges. Both teachers and students spend much time and energy in vocabularyteaching and learning, however, the reward is very baffling.The amount of a learner's vocabulary directly influences the development of hislanguage competence and the effectiveness of vocabulary teaching is directly relatedto the learners' language ability. However, we can find the disappointed reality ofEnglish vocabulary teaching in many higher vocational colleges. There are at leastthree kinds of negative phenomenon: 1) Teachers let the students remember Englishword by rote so that the latter gradually lose interest in English learning; 2) Teacherspay more attention to tests and grades so that they do not try to use newer and morecomplicated teaching methods; 3) Too much inapposite interference brings trouble forstudents to grasp new English words.The current situation is unsatisfying and the biggest problem of vocabularyteaching which higher vocational college students are faced with is finding aneffective method to remember and grasp new words in a long period. To get this done,the English teachers in higher vocational colleges shoud try their best to inspirestudents' interest and enthusiasm during the whole process of vocabulary teaching. A,英语论文范文
