With rapid socialdevelopment, teachers' social function has become increasingly significant and theirprofessional connotation has been gradually enriched, ushering in a new stage ofprofessional development and making teachers' professionalization a worldwide trend.Currently, the whole world attaches great importance to the training and development ofteachers, thus teachers' professional development has been the focus of today'seducational research. Along with increasingly prominent importance of teachers,thegeneral public has placed much higher quality requirements and expectations on teachers.Considered as professionals responsible for education and teaching, teachers are expectedto acquire advanced teaching philosophy as well as multi-layered composite knowledgestructure. Besides, they should be capable of educational research and management,understanding and interacting with others. (Ye, 2017: 21-27) EFL teachers,in particular,not only bear the responsibilities of teaching and educating, but also shoulder the dualtasks of linguistic communication and cultural transmission. Therefore, amid the trend ofteachers' professionalization,how to pursue their own professional development hasdrawn the attention of educators and teachers at all levels.As an important group of university teachers, college English teachers have all alongbeen the concern in society. Due to constant expansion in China's Higher Education anda serious shortage of English teachers, a large number of undergraduates and graduateswith non-teacher-training background have taken the job of college English teaching. Theprofessional growth of this group now becomes the top priority of the currentdevelopment of college English teachers. As a first-tier college English teacher, I havepersonally experienced and witnessed a variety of explorations, achievements, confusionsand hardships in the process of those teachers' teaching, life and career development.Among them,some successfully grow from novices into excellent teachers while othersremain stagnant and confused. This thesis takes major concerns of young and confusedteachers into consideration and attempts to examine and seek solutions to problems suchas factors that promote or hinder the development of college English teachers, difficultiesin the pursuit of teachers' own professional development and ways to make sustainabledevelopment in teaching practice and personal life.From the perspective of humanistic concern, this study starts with a case study offour outstanding college English teachers.
