Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research
Because China's human resources(referring to senior management personnel)can not meet the requirements of these world-class companies,they turn to the use of foreign senior management personnel.One of the most important reasons is that our proficiencies and skills in English are difficult to compete with foreign management,which loses the chance to cooperate with the world-class enterprises in China.Therefore,it is necessary for English teaching to start with the training of students’oral English and their communication skills and to try to avoid a professional,non-foreign status.
It is no doubt that developing learners’communicative ability has a great and much higher demand for the teachers’teaching,but the situation of oral English teaching in China is much disappointing.Until now,it is not so successful and satisfactory for the English language teaching and learning in China as it is expected. “Chinese foreign language teaching is conducted in a big country where there is no English-speaking community…Foreign language proficiency is achieved principally in the situation of formal teaching”(Long,1981)Learners just try hard to remember a lot of new words、grammar and recite the text,who cannot skillfully use what they have learnt.Both the teachers and students all ignore the nature of language as an instrument of communication. Therefore the situation of Chinese English teaching must be reformed,or the students hardly adapt to the competition of the developing society.
English teaching in China actually uses a lot of teaching methods,such as grammar-translation method,the direct method,the audio-lingual method and the heuristic scenario language teaching(the Situational method)and so on.The purpose of these methods is the same,which is to improve the environment of traditional English learning,including language environment、psychological environment and communication environment.Another aim is to change,“a book,a mouth,a piece of chalk,a table and a blackboard”(it was called the“five'A'project”)English language teaching situation.The teaching methods are changeable,but the essence is still teacher-centered teaching mode.It is no doubt that every time the teaching reform is more conductive than before:heuristic teaching effect is stronger than spoon-feeding teaching indoctrination;the audio-lingual method is also much more effective than the grammar-translation.But all these methods ignore the students’ initiative.They regard students as the passive inculcation and information receivers, thus cannot mobilize the enthusiasm and initiative of students."Examination-oriented English"and"dumb English"can be seen everywhere,so teaching will not achieve the desired effect,let alone developing creative talents.So the times call for new teaching model and teaching methods.
ITA is very important in language learning process and is the most efficient way for learners to take part in and manage their own studies(Allwright,1984).It requires teachers to shift from traditional teaching methods to the more interactive approach and to lay emphasis on students’subjectivity.Therefore,it is urgent to research on the student-centered classroom interaction to help to improve their or
