Abstract

This thesis studies the translation of idioms with Chinese culture from a perspective of functional equivalence, taking the two English versions of Three kingdoms as examples. In this thesis, the author firstly makes a brief introduction to the two most classical English versions and their translators, then states the definition, characteristics and factors influencing the translation of Chinese idioms in detail, and reviews Nida's translation theory. The author uses Nida's functional equivalence theory as a theoretical framework to compare and analyze whether two translators achieve functional equivalence from several different aspects, and finds that both make some mistakes in translating while involving Chinese culture. In the end, this thesis summarizes translation techniques exerted by Robert and Taylor and gives several proper strategies when translating Chinese idioms.

Key words: functional equivalence, Three Kingdoms, Chinese idioms, cultural diversity

1  Introduction
Three Kingdoms is the first full-length novel with clear chapter divisions to appear in ancient China, written by Luo Guanzhong at the turning of Yuan and Ming Dynasty, Which has a wide-ranging impact on Chinese literature. With his superb artistic means, Luo Guanzhong depicts battles of wits and courage during the Three Kingdoms period, reshapes images of many household historical figures and describes contradictions and struggle among different classes. To some extent, it facilitates the spread of history during the Three Kingdoms period. Moreover, the novel is the miniature of the traditional ideology and thoughts of the ancient Chinese, the manifestation of wisdom and power of those people and the masterpiece of ancient Chinese culture. Luo Guanzhong exerts tremendous Chinese idioms, most of which are four-character, to describe the status and evolution of political and military strategies, characters and social life as well. Given the fact that idioms are the essence of Chinese language and culture, the translation shoulders the responsibility to disseminate Chinese culture.
