Abstract
As a carrier of culture spreading, tourism materials play an increasingly important role. However, English translation of tourism materials is not really optimistic in quality. Some errors exist ubiquitously, such as misspellings, Chinglish and lack of cultural connotations, which not only causes the misunderstanding of foreign visitors, but also affects the transmission of culture and the development of Chinese tourism. Starting from the languages and cultures between China and English-speaking countries, this thesis briefly describes features and functions of tourism materials. And then it analyzes the main problems and causes in the process of English translation of tourism materials with examples. Accordingly, some specific principles and approaches are put forward to improve the translations and reduce barriers, with the aims to make Chinese unique culture easier for foreign visitors to understand and promote the spread of Chinese civilization.

1. Introduction
1.1 Current situation of Chinese tourism
With the deepening of reform and opening-up, the successive holding of the Olympic Games, the World Expo and Asian Games in China, tourism gains great opportunities for the further development, as well as the national economy. As the Oriental country with an ancient civilization, China boasts abundant and brilliant tourism resources due to the vast territory, long-standing history, beautiful natural landscapes and multi-ethic cultures, attracting more and more foreign visitors to sightseeing with a hope of a better understanding of this mysterious country. In spite of the different ages, races, religions or aesthetic tastes, people who want to visit China share the same hope of being acquainted with Chinese culture. Thus it makes China one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Recent statistics from the World Travel Tourism Council (WTTC) show that China’s total tourism turnover has reached US$499 billion. It has made such a prediction that China has the potential to be the world’s NO.1 tourist destination in the coming ten years.
