摘 要

Abstract
With the rapid development of economy, science and technology, the whole world is a village. The cultural exchanges between different countries are more frequent than ever before. According to the similarity between the cultures of different countries on the basis of, make the intercultural communication and translation possible. However, the special personality culture elements in different countries and unique become obstacles of intercultural communication between different countries. The difficulty of translation is cultural background knowledge. Obviously, it is not only a linguistic transformation; culture is the channel, process communication and integration. Now, movies and TV shows have become an indispensable communication media in cross cultural communication. At the same time, they have become a kind of art form; it has a lot of audience. Subtitle translation should get more local experts attention and importance. Subtitle translation based on the America famous translation theorist Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory to analyze and study the film the great Gatsby to illustrate the practical significance and the application of functional equivalence theory.

1 Introduction
With the phenomena of economic globalization, we have more and more opportunities to share resource. Movies have been the most popular entertainment across cultural and language barriers for their charm and attractiveness. As one of main mass media of cross-cultural communication, film is an important carrier of human culture since its birth in 1895. The rapid development of photography, sound recording and digitalization has made films more enjoyable and magnificent. Films are more accessible to people, which compared with broadcasting, books and other medium forms. With the development of China’s economic and the deepening of China’s opening, China has been communicated with other countries. In recent years, a large numbers of foreign films have flooded into Chinese audiences’ life. A lot of Chinese people are appealed to these foreign audiovisual products.
