Abstract

Foul language, as a dark and indecent side of English culture, is frequently used by native speakers and often confuses second language learners and translators with its complex meanings. In order to help people understand and translate English foul language better, this paper systematically classifies English foul language into blaspheme, oaths, four letter words, abusive swears and nation-insulting words; introduces twenty different language contexts where foul language can be adopted; probes the abusive, cathartic, ejaculatory and interpersonal functions of foul language. Therefore, based on the functional equivalence theory, the paper argues that in order to translate foul language in a proper and natural manner, one has to analyze the context of language, identify the category of the swear words and find the right Chinese counterpart in accordance with function by literal translation based on functional equivalence, translation through alternative replacement based on functional equivalence, translation through functional replacement and liberal translation based on functional equivalence

Key words: foul language; functions of foul language; functional equivalence                   theory; translation

1.    Introduction
Language is a mirror that has "faithfully reflected a nation's history, culture, entertainments, beliefs and discriminations." (Zhen Yefu, 1993: 3) Foul language as an essential part of English shows the darker and indecent side of English culture. Despite the conventional academic avoidance of such a domain, foul language enables people to express more complicated emotions with a more vivid approach. However, being a reflection of culture, social mentality and traditional customs, swearing often confuses second language learners with its complex meanings derived from a mixture of denotation, connotation, social context and communicative manner. More often than not, foul language offers much more information than it seems to have, therefore is difficult to comprehend and translate.
