Abstract:China is a country that attaches great importance to names, honor, and prestige. Chinese cuisine names also contain profound cultural information in addition to the ingredients and flavors. It is very important to translate Chinese cuisine names accurately and vividly so that foreign friends can get a glimpse of cultural connotation while tasting the unique flavor of our dishes. So the translation of Chinese dish names is especially important in order to promote communication with the outside world and strengthen the intercultural communication. This paper begins with an introduction and a classification of the cultural information contained in Chinese cuisine names. However, due to differences between Chinese and Western histories, dietary cultures and cultural values, the rich cultural information contained in many Chinese cuisine names may sometimes cause difficulties for translators in both the understanding process and the translation process. Therefore this study then analyzes some problems that translators and interpreters might meet with in translation of the Chinese dish names rich in cultural information. The purpose of translation activity and differences between Chinese and Western cultures both will affect the translator's choice of translation strategies of cultural information in Chinese cuisine names, so the study will help translators out of the dilemma and to find various appropriate translation approaches of dealing with the cultural information contained in Chinese cuisine names. |
