Abstract
Gone With The Wind(hereinafter referred to as GWTW) is a masterpiece of famous American writer Margaret Mitchell. Since published in 1936, it has been translated into 27 languages. In China, many versions appear, among which Fu Donghua’s translation is controversial. Many scholars show their comments on the version of Fu Donghua from different angles. Some give their opinions based on rewriting theory, some illustrate Fu Donghau’s version in the socio-cultural context, some comment with the functional translation theory, and the others pay their attention to the use of domestication under the theory of skopos. To achieve the translation aim, Fu Donghua translates it with the way of domestication, but he doesn’t abandon foreignization. He makes a perfect balance between them. Though many scholars have given their opinions on the version, comprehensive and objective analysis on the translation studies is rare. This paper aims to analyze the translation strategy from social context, skopos and functional translation.
In this paper, the theory and practice is combined. The theory background gives me a way to analyze the translation methods of Fu Donghua’s version GWTW. With the help of corpus,英语论文,many researches and comments are found. This paper is based on social context, skopos and functional translation and uses examples and quotation to comment. The paper comment focus on the translation of people and place names, flexible citing of idioms and proverbs, translation of long sentence and the abridged and added translation of the contents. The paper aims to give a comprehensive and symmetric analysis about the translation strategy from multi-angles and make a contribution to the translation and comments of Fu Donghua’ version GWTW.
