Abstract

Mo Yan, winner of Mao Dun Prize for literature and the only Chinese winner of Nobel Literature Prize, is one of the greatest writers in China. His works are full of intricate emotions about the hometown in memory and imagination, which makes him the representative of root-seeking literature.

Translation works play an important role in Mo Yan’s success of Nobel Prize, according to Mo Yan himself and specialists from all over the world. As great Chinese literature works are too complicated to translate into other languages, Chinese literature works can hardly be rebirth in different environments and be accepted by non-Chinese readers like Japanese and Indian literature works.

However, Mo Yan and translators of his works have shown us a successful way of rebirth and acceptance. Red Sorghum is the representative work of Mo Yan, which has been translated most. There are a lot of special Chinese elements in Red Sorghum. These elements show the traditional Chinese sense of worth, represent the historical change of china in the twentieth century and describe the living condition in Chinese country in that time. All of these are the hardest and most important content to be translated.

This paper will study the translation of special Chinese elements in Red Sorghum, based on the translation work of Howard Goldblatt. Besides the original work and acceptance, to convey the cultural connotation is more important in translation.
