1. Introduction
Before going further to the main factors of college students’ English-Chinese code switching, some basic terms as code and code switching should be clarified. In view of the enormous worldwide achievements in the literature on code switching researches, which contribute a lot to our optimal understanding of such a complicated linguistic phenomenon, it is unfortunate for the author that there is still no consensus regarding the exact meaning of the terms used by many prominent scholars of various persuasions in the field. So hereafter the author would like to introduce the most frequent version adopted in the present study.
1.1 Code
The term code is a term for a language or any varieties of the same language such as dialect, register and style and so on. In general, when you open your mouth to speak something, you must choose a particular language, dialect, style, register or other varieties—that is, a particular code. English is a code; Chinese is a code; Cantonese, as well as ancient Chinese, is also a code. As Wardhaugh mentioned, such terms as dialect, language, style, pidgin would arouse emotions, and variety is not quite neutral either, being by definition a variation on same other, perhaps more standard, language (Wardhaugh, 1986). In contrast, “code” is more general and neutral, which can be used to refer to any kind of language system that two or more people employ for communication. That is why the neutral term code is applied to the present field of study.
