Song is a way of delighting the mind, expressing feeling and communicating. So are English songs. English songs in different times reflect culture of that period. Therefore English songs are good materials in English teaching. Song-teaching can not only be used to teach students English songs, but also be considered as a teaching method by which teachers teach students words, phrases, sentences etc.
An foreign expert, Eken states that songs can be used: to provide a relaxed classroom atmosphere; to encourage extensive and intensive listening; to stimulate discussion of attitudes and feelings; to encourage creativity and use of imagination; to present and practice a topic, a language point, lexis, etc.; to bring variety and fun to learning. And learning English through songs develops a non-threatening and relaxed classroom atmosphere in which the four language skills can be enhanced. According to Domoney & Harris, music is highly relevant and a strong source of language outside of the classroom. In the book Young Learners, the famous linguists Sarah Phillips states that music, which is an important part of children’s language learning, plays an important role in learning.
