Abstract
Affect refers to one’s attitude towards something which expresses whether he or she needs objective things or not. Affective factors play a very important role in the process of English teaching. The main content of this paper is research on five affective factors in English teaching which include motivation, anxiety, attitude, self-esteem, empathy. This thesis aims at analyzing the problems and obstacles when students are learning English through the research of affective factors and some relevant affective theories, and also inquiring into the current affective situation of students and even make feasible suggestions constructing positive affects and avoiding negatives ones in order to help students improve the learning efficiency and promote all-around development of the students. Since the new curriculum reform of 2017 has been put into practice, affect has been regarded as one of the most integral factors in the process of English learning. However, for a long time, in the present English classroom, especially in Chinese junior schools, Chinese teachers’ ignoring the development of affective factors in English teaching results in students’ low learning efficiency and little motivation in English learning. As a consequence, some negative affects like high anxiety and little motivation will reduce students’ learning efficiency in a great way. Positive affects are likely to stimulate students’ learning enthusiasm and interests; while negative affects may suppress students’ motivation and then prevent their learning progress. Thus, on the basis of affective research, this paper proposes some targeted strategies on how to stimulate positive affects and overcome negative affects accordingly.
