【 摘 要】 本文通过语料库略论了中国大学生在英语写作中使用过多的两个连接词,英语论文范文,“ what is more” 与 “ that is to say” ,并把中国大学生使用该两个词的情况与本族语者使用该两个词的情况进行对比探讨。 By applying the corpus approach, this study focuses on the usage oconnectors in the Chinese students’English writing. The study uses datafrom the Chinese Learner English Corpus (CLEC) and the British writtenEnglish corpus (LOB). The AntConc3.2.1w software is used to helpanalyze the data in the present study.Connectors are said to function as cohesive ‘ signal posts’indiscourse (Leech and Svartvik 1994:177), helping the listener or reader torelate successive units to each other and thus make sense of the textHowever, it is not easy to use all these linking words appropriately(Aleterg&Tapper 1998). For this reason, this study tends to examine some of the mostlyoverused connectors, namely ‘ what is more’ , and ‘ that is to say’inChinese learners’writing and compare them with the use in nativeEnglish writing. In this way, the possible origins underlying the overuseof some connectors will be explored. Finally, the implications for thestudy of SLA and EFL teaching will be stated as well. 2.The dis course connectors and res earch methodology 2.1 Some empirical studies of connectors Empirical studies haveshown that the use of connectors is not easy for language learners, ESLand EFL learners in particular (Granger& Tyson, 1996; Altenberg &Tapper.1998)Granger and Tyson (1996) used a corpus- based approach to studypatterns of connector usage. In their study, the researcher analyzed datafrom a large - scale corpus of learner English, the ICLE. Their findingshowed some instance of overuse involving the connectors such aactually, indeed, of course, moreover, namely, and on the contrary.2.2 The selection of the connector to be studied One question tobe investigated is to what extent Chinese learners use connectors to markthe same semantic relation as native speakers. To investigate this, we aregoing to analyze the functional roles of the connectors in the material. The two connectors to be investigated ‘ that is to say’and ‘ what imore’are highly overused through the frequency comparison. Theconnector ‘ that is to say’occurred 51 times in CLEC, while in LOB only8 times. It is one of the most overused connectors in Chinese writingSimilarly, ‘ What is more’is seldom used by native speakers, buChinese students are using more frequently than the native speakers. Thedistribution of the two connectors in the two corpora is shown in the tablebelow (table 1): 3.Detailed s tudies of the two connectors anddis cus s ions 3.1 That is to say The phrase that is to say seldom occurred in thenative speaker’ s writing; on the contrary, it is frequently seen in Chinesestudents’writing as shown in the above table. Through the followingexamples, we are going to find the possible reason underlying thephenomenon. So we must consider most people’ s security and right at first, that isto say, anyone who commits a crime should be punished. The prisonsystem isn’ t outdated. (From CLEC)The phrase that is to say is used to indicate the same idea moreclearly or precisely. But in the above one sentence, it is placed betweenthe two clauses inappropriately because the clauses after that is to sayurn to be another unrelated topics. The following example shows another way of misuse. The inequality among men may result in the pheno,英语论文 |
