Abstract:
Everyday use is considered as the best story of the contemporary Afro-American woman Alice Walker’s. Critics at home and abroad share the same view on the theme: mainly focus on the conflicts between black culture and white culture, the alienation and restoration of blacks’ cultural identity in the white culture dominant society, the recovery of the African cultural tradition and so on. There are not many studies on the ferment and coexistence of the two cultures. This paper will analyze Dee and Mama’s different attitudes towards the quilts. It finally draws the conclusion that the black need to stick to their African cultural tradition on the one hand, but on the other hand it is desirable for them to absorb the beneficial things from white culture to realize the modernization of black culture, namely the necessity and feasibility of fusion between white and black cultures.

1. Introduction
1.1 Thesis Statement
The selected topic develops through record of a day when a black family mother and daughter reunited, especially to the conflicts caused by the ancestral quilts, illustrating that black Americans hold different attitudes towards culture heritage. This paper aims to show that the significance of the inheritance and cultural traditions lies in understanding the cultural connotation, not floating in form, reflecting black culture and life value orientation through the contradictions and conflicts between the dominant position of the white culture and disadvantaged black culture. Though the analysis and comparison of the two generations’ different attitudes to quilts, the paper shows the right way to develop black culture .On the one hand, the black should master native culture, on the other hand, the black should understand the white culture, absorbing the essence and get rid of the dregs.
