1.Introduction
1.1. A Brief Introduction to Amy Tan
Amy Tan is a Chinese American writer whose works explore mother-daughter relationships. Amy Tan was born on February 19, 1952, in Oakland, California. She is the daughter of an engineer and a nurse. Both of her parents had emigrated from China. She is the only daughter of the three children. In the late 1960s, Amy's sixteen-year-old brother Peter died of a brain tumor. Within a year of Peter's death, Amy's father died of the same disease. After these family tragedies, Amy's mother moved her to Switzerland and Amy finished high school there. During this period, Amy knew her mother's former marriage to a Chinese man with abuse and their children, one of whom died as a toddler. All these incidents provide Amy the basis of her first novel named The Joy Luck Club. In the novel, four Chinese American immigrant women set up a club called "the Joy Luck Club" where they can play Chinese game of mahjong while feasting on a variety of food. The three mothers and four daughters share stories about their lives in the form of vignettes as the novel proceeds, and both the conflicts in the generations and genders exist in that modern tragicomedy.
