Abstract

The Sun Also Rises describes a group of young Englishmen and Americans wandering about in Paris and Spanish bullrings and don't want to go back to their hometown after the First World War. They spend all the day in love and sex in addition to alcohol, sprees and bullfight. They are typical "lost generation" suffering from the war and behave effeminately and dissolutely. This thesis elaborates on the background of the "lost generation" and expresses that the "lost generation" actually are not lost through analyzing Hemingway's life and his work The Sun Also Rises in which the characters struggle for egress and self-esteem.

1. Introduction
Gertrude Stein categorized the young artists who took part in the First World War as the "lost generation" when she talked to Hemingway in 1924. The "Lost generation" were born between 1891 and 1905 and most of them were white people from the middle class or above with the majority of men. These young artists were similar in their age, experience, emotion and their works which gradually formed a new school of literature. Meanwhile, the Lost Generation reveals the mental outlook and culture thought which gain popularity in America, even in the whole Europe, representing the thoughts and sentiments of the young men who took part in the war.
