ABSTRACT
As one of the most famous writers in the world, Hawthorne has made a great impact on people with his masterpiece The Scarlet Letter, especially the vivid figure Hester. Many scholars do many research studies about her characters. Many scholars analyze Hester’s characters from different aspects, such as religious background, religion ethnic, Hawthorne’s thoughts and Hester herself. However, in this paper, it will focus on Hester’s three emotional experiences (Hester and Pearl, Hester and Dimmesdale and Hester and Chillingworth) to analyze her characters. Through the overview of the plot of The Scarlet Letter and the description of the Hester’s words and deeds, the main characters of Hester in The Scarlet Letter were shown as independence and bravery, creation and inconsistency, fragility, timidity and so on. Hester’s characters are tightly connected with her three emotional experiences. Further more, Hester’s various characters make a great impacts on women, which boost women to release their thoughts and action. Therefore, the results of the research about this paper have contained significance for the liberation of women thoughts. Hester sets a good example for modern women. She encourages them to pursue freedom and happiness.
