摘要
弗兰纳里•奥康纳出身于乔治亚州,是20世纪美国南方著名的作家。天主教徒是她的另外一个身份。这位天才作家三十九岁就死于红斑狼疮,她短暂的一生只给我们留下了32部短篇小说和两部长篇小说。虽然我们对她的名字并不熟悉,但是她的著作却被看作是美国文学中闪耀的明珠。近年来对于她著作的探讨不断涌现,证明了她小说中具有独特的魅力。
无论是她笔下有精神或者身体缺陷的人物,还是小说中充满的哥特式的元素,都常常引起评论家们的热烈争议。通过阅读她的短篇小说集《好人难寻》和《上升的一切必将汇合》以及她的散文《神秘与风尚》、书信集《生存的习惯》等著作,不难发现这位虔诚的天主教徒从一而终的救赎主题。
本文将结合当时的历史背景社会价值取向等问题,通过略论作者笔下怪诞的南方人物形象,研讨奥康纳短篇小说中的救赎意义。全文主体将主要由三部分构成,第一部分结合作家写作的社会历史背景,以及作者本人宗教信仰来解释奥康纳采用救赎这一主题的原因。第二部分从《善良的乡下人》、《瘸子应该先进去》和《帕克的背》三部短篇著作来略论奥康纳笔下的怪诞人物以及各自如何得到救赎。第三章总结奥康纳短篇小说中的救赎意义。

Abstract
Flannery O’Connor, born in Georgia in the 20th century, is a famous Southern writer in America. She is also a Catholic. This gifted writer died from lupus at the age of 39, only 32 short stories and two novels are left in her brief life. Her name seems to be unfamiliar to most of us, while her works are regarded as pearls in American literature. More and more researches on her works are emerging in recent years, which confirm the fascination of her stories.
Fierce debates among critics about her works focused both on the characters with mental or physical defects and the grotesque style of her writing. By reading her short story collections A Good Man is Hard to Find and Everything that Rises Must Coverage and her prose Mystery and Manners, letter collections The Habit of Being, we can also get a result that there is the theme of redemption in her stories.
This essay would discuss the meaning of redemption in her short stories by analyzing the grotesque characters. There are mainly three parts of my thesis. In the first part, the background of redemption is introduced, and it will help us know the reasons for redemption in O’Connor’ stories. The second part is to analyze the grotesque characteristics in Good Country People, The Lame Shall Enter First, and Parker’s Back. And find out how these people get their redemption. In the final part, the meaning of the redemption would be related.
