摘要
菲茨杰拉德是二十世纪美国著名的小说家。在他的著作中，英语论文网站，他真实生动地再现了二十世纪二三十年代美国的社会风貌和价值观念。由于他真实地再现了年轻一代人的“美国梦”的幻灭，他被称为“迷惘的一代”的代表作家和“爵士时代”的代言人。《了不起的盖茨比》是菲茨杰拉德的代表作，讲述了一个对于幻灭的美国梦的故事。该小说奠定了他在美国文学史上的重要地位。

本文拟对《了不起的盖茨比》中所应用的象征进行较为系统的略论，从而加深对小说的主题思想的理解。论文共分四部分，第一部分介绍作者生平，小说的重要地位，探讨的内容以及意义。第二部分介绍象征主义，象征以及其效果。第三部分阐述小说中的象征及其意义。最后一部分是结论。经过略论，本论文认为小说《了不起的盖茨比》中的象征具有丰富的含义，了解这些象征有利于理解小说美国梦的主题。

Abstract
F. Scott Fitzgerald is a renowned American novelist of 20th century. His works are vivid snapshot of the American society and their moral values in the 1920’s. He is regarded as an outstanding writer of the “lost generation” and the spokesman of the “Jazz Age” for his vivid representations of the sadness and sorrow about the disillusionment of America dream. The Great Gatsby is considered to be his magnum opus, a story about the disillusionment of American dream and it helps establish his status in the modern American literature history.
The Great Gatsby arouses much interest and attracts much attention of researchers since its publication. They focus on the narrative techniques, the theme of American dream, the graceful, delicate prose style, racial consciousness, etc.
Fitzgerald is an expert at using symbols. The crafted employment of symbolism adds a wider layer of depth and dimensions to the novel and sparks the emotional resonance in readers.
This thesis includes a relatively systematic analysis of symbolism in this novel, thus making readers have a better understanding of the meanings of symbols and have a deeper insight of the theme. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first part includes an introduction of Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby as well as the significance and purpose of this thesis. The second part introduces symbolism, symbols and the effect of symbolism. The third part focuses on symbols and their implied meanings in the novel. Following the third part is the conclusion part. Through careful analysis, the author of this thesis holds that the symbols in The Great Gatsby have abundant implied meanings and a better understanding of these symbols makes for a better understanding of the theme of the novel.
