Abstract
Jane Austen was a brilliant British female writer during the eighteenth century, whose works always focused on the course of courtship and marriage of the females in the gentry’s families, with women’s gifted sense of meticulous observation and humorous writing style.
Northanger Abbey was the only one of Austen’s works that contained Gothic element, and it told a story how the heroine, Catherine, awakened from the deep influence of the Gothic novel she read and saw the real world around her as it was, and finally won a wonderful husband.
During the seventeen years of Catherine’s life, the Gothic novel played a very important role in her growth. The thesis holds the opinion that besides serving as entertainment of Catherine’s daily life, the Gothic novel shaped her values in a wrong way, which misled her to believe that the scary, passionate, or romantic redemption would happen in real life. Thus, she chose her friends based on the love for the Gothic novel, and the Gothic fantasies offered her Gothic illusions against the reality, especially when she visited Northanger Abbey, leading to the betrayal by her unrealiable friend and her own misconduct during her visit. Catherine’s experiences demonstrate that addiction to the Gothic novel will give one bad influence, make one live in the Gothic fantasies with mystery and horror, and prevent one from recognizing the real world rationally. Thus in a way, Northanger Abbey is a criticism of the Gothic novel, of people’s unquestioning acceptance of fantasy, as well as a support of the rational attitude towards life and reality, a theme frequently elaborated in Austen’s writings.
