Abstract:
As Angela Carter’s short stories are adapted from traditional fairy tales in a controversial way, she is regarded as one of the most ingenious writers in Britain. In Carter’s short stories, protagonists are all brave, strong, and self-conscious females who surprise all the readers. Her rewriting is a subversion to the traditional fairy tales.
This thesis analyzes the female images in The Company of Wolves, The Tiger’s Bride, and Wolf-Alice. By comparing with traditional female images, the author finds that the female images in Carter’s short stories accord with the features of the new woman and subvert the traditional female images.
Combining with social circumstances in which women are in a low position, it is easy to find out that as a feminist, Carter hopes to arouse women’s self-awareness and change women’s social circumstances through encouraging women to resist patriarchy and be independent.
